September Snapshots: News, Events, and More!
Spread the Word to Support Our Classroom Cozy Corners
Our own Mrs. Bria (school counselor) has created a Donor's Choose grant to gain materials and tools for each of our classrooms in support of our students' emotion regulation skills. Please consider donating. Use the code LIFTOFF. If you donate in the next few days your donation will be matched up to $50. WOur staff and students appreciate your support.
Mrs. Bria's Project: School-Wide Cozy Corners for Self-Regulation
Our elementary school would like the opportunity to create a safe space in our classrooms where students are able to self-regulate, reflect, and refocus. These spaces will provide accessible tools to help students cope with big feelings and calm their bodies. This will help students transition back to learning as quickly as possible.
Feelings posters and calming visuals, as well as different types of fidgets and sensory tools will be available in every room to assist students as they self-regulate. Our hope is that students will be able to independently go to a safe space in their classroom, set a timer, choose and use a coping strategy, and then get back on track. Please help us in cultivating a positive learning environment for ALL of our students!
Smile! It's Picture Day!
It’s that time of year again! Picture Day will be Wednesday, September 27. Your picture packets will be coming home with your child soon, so keep an eye out for those! We will be using Coffee Pond again this year. Feel free to go online and put your order in prior to picture day so you are ready to go. We are also doing sibling pictures the same day as picture day. If you would like your children to have sibling pictures taken, reach out to Alex Murphy. Email her with your children’s names and classroom teachers please!

September is National Library Card Sign Up Month!
Did you know that September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month? All Rowayton students can register for a library card at our neighborhood library, Rowayton Library. Library card applications are being sent home with students, but you can also stop by the library or register online to get your child's library card. Rowayton Library hosts a number of activities and events throughout the year for children of all ages. Click here to see the schedule of activities.
Check Out the Rowayton Register on Instagram!
The Rowayton Register is a video summary of events that occurred at school this week and reminders for the upcoming week. We know that we have many busy families and we hope the Rowayton Register will help keep you informed when you're on the go. Remember that more details can always be found in the weekly Sunday Smore, on our website, or on the Rowayton PTA website. We look forward to growing and showing you our communication skills as we develop this piece!

Safety Drills for September
During the month of September, we practice and review two drills: Fire Evacuation and Lock Down. We successfully practiced our Fire Evacuation Drill the first week of school. On September 29, teachers will review what actions we take if we were to have a Lock Down. We do not actively simulate this situation. Teachers will have conversations about reporting to safe locations in various settings of the school, and staying quiet. If you do not want your child to participate in this conversation, please let you child's teacher know by September 28. We will continue to review or practice one safety drill each month. Our staff and Safety Committee are commended for their attention to these procedures and protocols.

NWEA MAP Growth Assessment at Rowayton
NWEA MAP Growth assessment is a nationally standardized test which measures what students know and informs what they're ready to learn by using a computer adaptive test that adjusts to the student. Your child's teacher will use the results of the NWEA MAP Growth assessments to better understand your child's individual needs in order to promote progress. Students at Rowayton will participate in the NWEA MAP Growth assessments in math and reading at the beginning, middle, and end of the year.
The window for administering these tests for the middle of the school year will begin on September 13. Below is an outline of the grades that will be testing each day. Your child’s teacher can provide you with a more a more detailed outline of the testing schedule.
If your child must be absent during this window, a make up date will be arranged. Teachers have prepared for positive and calm testing environments. Please join us in ensuring that our students are both mentally and physically prepared. We encourage rest the night before, and breakfast will be available at school if needed. Thank you for your continued support!

Rowayton joins the Senators on the Field September 22
The Brien McMahon Athletic Department is inviting our school and community members to participate in a football-filled evening this fall. Our students will be able to experience a pre-game meet and greet with our school mascot, Brien McMahon, enter the field with the football team, and stand with the players and cheerleaders during the playing of the national anthem. In addition to the game, they will be treated to music from our award-winning marching band and their halftime show.
